Meet your child's teacher - Kate Ng

Specialist reading teacher

Kate Ng M.Ed

Hi there 👋  It's nice to meet you!

I'm a mum to four big kids, wife, teacher and creator of the Kid World Readers online literacy programme. My happy place is being with my family, close to the beach, out on the water and travel.

Moving into the online space and developing this reading programme has been a labour of love for the last 5 years. My priority has been to ensure the online version of my teaching was authentic, accessible and effective. Now, here we are! Ready to help young children succeed in learning how to read and write well - wherever in the world you are.

With over 25+yrs of education experience (kindergarten, primary, private practice) my heart has always been with young children, sharing their joy when they discover something new about the world, watching them shine when realising their own achievements and the simple joy of all those funny little moments that happen over the day.

"I'm passionate about two things: empowering young children to become successful readers and writers & equipping parents with the evidence-based skills they need to guide & support their child. Through expert coaching, skilled resources, and a comprehensive teacher-led programme, our kids can succeed in reading and writing"

Kate Ng

Specialist Reading Teacher

A small school built on trust, Kid World Readers is small by design. That means real relationships, I know the families I teach. We approach every enrolment with openness and flexibility, because a child's reading journey works best when we're working together.

Every lesson your child watches on Kid World Readers was created by Kate Ng with a Master of Education specialising in Literacy and over 25 years of teaching experience.

When your child sits down for their 20 minutes each day, they are learning from one of the most experienced structured literacy specialists working in online education today.

Kate has spent 25 years watching children learn to read and now Kid World Readers means every child can.

"I've spent my entire career in kindergarten play, inside classrooms teaching children to read, training teachers to teach reading better, and working with children whom the system had quietly given up on. The children who teachers didn't know how to help and whose parents were told to "wait and see." The children who were bright, curious and capable but who struggled to have meaningful success with reading.

I've seen these children fall further behind while the adults around them discussed and trialled various approaches and activities, when what they needed was explicit instruction. The Science of Reading with structured, explicit, systematic phonics instruction has the science backed evidence that proves this is the way EVERY child can learn how to read (and write) well.

Sadly what's missing is access to this learning for every child. Some families don't live near a specialist tutor or can't afford lesson fees every week. Whether you homeschool, travel, or simply want to support your child who is struggling, I know the hardest part is not having the right training to know where to start."

"I built Kid World Readers because every child deserves access to expert literacy teaching, not just the ones whose families can afford it."

Kate Ng, Founder, Kid World Readers

So Kate built the school she knew would benefit every child and family.

Expert-led video lessons, built on the Science of Reading, designed so that a parent with no teaching background can sit alongside their child and watch the progress happen all within 20 minutes at a time.

The credentials that matter when your child's reading is at stake.

When you are trusting someone with something as important as your child's literacy, the teaching qualifications and experience matter.
Here is what Kate brings to every lesson.

Master of Education, Specialising in Literacy.

Kate's qualification gives her the deep theoretical grounding that underpins every pedagogical decision in the KWR programme.
25+ Years in the Classroom

From kindergarten to new entrant. From mainstream to specialist intervention. From New Zealand to international students. Kate has taught children to read in every context.
Science of Reading Specialist

Kate's programme is built entirely on structured literacy and the Science of Reading using the evidence based approach now mandated in schools across NZ, Australia, UK and the USA.
Dyslexia Experience

Kate has spent years working with children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. The structured, multi-sensory approach of KWR is specifically designed to support these learners.
School Leadership

Kate has worked at leadership level, guiding whole team literacy, mentoring teachers, and developing curriculum with the university, bringing expertise to every family she works with.
ESOL & International Teaching

Kate's experience with English language learners means the programme works beautifully for families where English is a second language, not just native English speakers.

Why the Science of Reading & why it matters for your child.

For decades, children were taught to read using methods that seemed natural but weren't backed by evidence eg: guessing from pictures, memorising whole words, relying on context clues. We know that 60% of children will learn to read regardless of these poor methods but for children who needed explicit instruction, children with dyslexia, children learning English, children who simply needed a more structured approach, this method failed them.

The Science of Reading has changed that. The body of research accumulated over 40+ years of cognitive science, neuroscience and education research, tells us exactly how the brain learns to read. It is not a trend. It is not a philosophy. It is the accumulated weight of evidence pointing to one outcome: children learn to read best when they are taught explicitly, systematically, and sequentially.

Every lesson in Kid World Readers is built on this foundation. Phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness. Phonics. Fluency. Vocabulary. Comprehension. In a developmental sequence with purpose and intention. With the depth of knowledge that only comes from 25 years of knowing exactly what children need next.
"I don't believe any child is a failed reader.' I believe some children haven't yet been taught in the way their brain needs to learn. My job is to connect with your child and engage their learning in a way that works for them."

A few things Kate knows to be true after 25 years.

Every child can learn to read.
Not every child learns at the same pace. But given the right strategy, at the right time, every child can make meaningful progress to becoming a confident reader. Kate has seen it too many times to doubt it.
Parents are not the problem.
You don't need to be a teacher. You need someone who knows what they're doing to take the lead and trust they've got the right plan to move your child forward. That's Kate's job. Yours is to press play, encourage and celebrate along the way.
20 min of quality learning is far better than hours of filling time. Consistent, focused, expert-designed instruction for 20 minutes a day far out ways well-intentioned but fluffy activities that lead nowhere. Structure and sequence are everything.

Structured Programme / 1:1 Tutoring (Specialist Intervention)
"My son 'J' struggled with phonics and sounding out words after his first year at school but thanks to Kate's expertise and programme, he's made remarkable progress. Kate not only identified 'J' challenges but also understood his learning style. After three terms of lessons 'J' has undergone a transformation in learning to read and write. He's not only overcome his struggles but has developed great confidence in his learning. Most importantly he's discovered a love for reading books, something we never thought possible in such a short time. Thank you Kate for everything you've done!"

Online Programme / 1:1 Tutoring (Homeschool)
Kate has been a real answer to prayer for our family. I was very excited to homeschool our children but in the world of learning to read and write, I was very overwhelmed and honestly didn’t know where to start. I had heard and seen some of Kate’s resources and lessons through friends and I was very impressed. From the first interaction all the way to now, Kate has been approachable and kind when working with my children and myself. Her guided work is achievable for children, meeting them where they’re at, but also gives them the appropriate level of challenge as they go. The program has been easy for me to follow and implement throughout our week; fitting in well with a busy homeschool schedule. We are very grateful to Kate and her experience in the early reading and writing field. Thank you, Kate.

Songyeon (Yr 1) started primary school in a new country, knowing only the alphabet. She was very hesitant to speak English and lacked confidence in a completely new environment. I felt that without the right support, things would not naturally improve — and meeting Kate was a decision I have never regretted. Kate combines structured, research-based teaching with genuine warmth and care for children. Through her foundation programme and private tutoring, Songyeon gradually became comfortable using English without resistance or fear. Most importantly, her confidence grew. I am truly grateful for the positive impact Kate had during such an important transition in our lives.

"Kate professionally guided our school’s team, she consistently demonstrated professionalism and was always well-prepared. Kate brought extensive knowledge, particularly in literacy, and her dedication to research is remarkable. Kate is always on the lookout for ways to enhance teachers' practices by making the most of their time with students, aiming for optimal outcomes while increasing teachers' confidence in delivering the curriculum. In our ESOL department, she showed us how to effectively incorporate essential vocabulary for second language learners in a way that is both relevant and contextual. Kate has a special talent for supporting underachieving students and consistently tries different approaches to help them improve and experience success. Kate tirelessly pursues knowledge and the best classroom practices in Literacy. She supports both teachers and students, fostering confidence and bringing out the best in everyone. I have no hesitation in recommending Kate to any organisation."
